Imam An-Nawawi is considered among the great hadith commentators. He received the name of Sheikh al-Islam (the sheikh of Islam). He is also one of the pillars of the Shafi'i legal school.
He was born in the village of Nawa near Damascus in Syria. He learned the Koran from childhood and trained in various Islamic sciences such as hadith, Arabic language and Islamic jurisprudence. He was endowed with an excellent memory and devoted himself to learning religious sciences and attended daily nearly twelve courses dealing with various branches of Islamic sciences.
