The Messenger of Allah was born in Mecca on the 12th of Rabi' al-awwal, the year of the elephant. His father was Abd-Allah ibn Abd al-Muttalib al-Hashimi and his mother Amina Bint Wahab. At that time, Mecca was filled with idols that the Arabs worshiped. When the mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gave birth to him, a light illuminated the house as well as the palaces of Syria. When he was born, his grandfather took him to the Ka'ba, invoked ALLAH and thanked Him. He chose the name Mohammed for him.
